Employee Development

As a new employee with ICON Central Laboratories, you will receive a comprehensive orientation to the company, your department and position. In addition, you will be offered a wide range of training and development programs, specifically designed to help you master your current responsibilities and prepare you for future career opportunities within the company. We are committed to helping each and every employee reach his or her career goals.

New Employee Orientation

All new and transferred employees, as well as newly promoted managers, participate in the ICON Central Laboratories' Orientation Program.

We understand that there are many things to learn when you join a new company. Consequently, we structure our orientation program over an extended period of time. This approach enables you to receive information that is most critical to your new position first and offers a better context for learning. On your first day at ICON Central Laboratories, you will meet with a representative from our Human Resources Department to complete your paperwork, receive your ID badge, take a facility tour and learn about what to expect in your first 90 days. Within one month of hire, you will begin taking your formal Orientation classes, which are delivered in three, four-hour sessions in weekly intervals and cover topics such as Introduction to Clinical Trials, Sexual Harassment and OSHA/Safety Training.

Host Program for New Employees

ICON Central Laboratories also provides a Host Program as a part of each new employee’s orientation. The Host Program pairs each new employee with an experienced employee who has volunteered to serve as a personal resource. Your "host" will join you for several scheduled coffee breaks throughout your first 90 days to help you get acquainted with the other employees and assist you with general questions and concerns you may have in making ICON your new place of work.

Training for Newly Transferred and Promoted Employees

As a transferred employee or newly promoted manager, you will meet with the Manager of Training and Development to ensure that all administrative tasks are completed. During this time you will review your new training requirements, functional competencies and responsibilities to ensure a smooth transition into your new role at ICON Central Laboratories.

Employee Training Requirements

To ensure that each employee receives the training necessary to be successful in his or her position, each department and job has pre-defined training requirements. These requirements will be reviewed at the time of hire, transfer or promotion. Each employee has a personal training log that documents his or her progress in completing these programs.

Training Classes

Throughout the year, employees may take advantage of training programs to improve their skills. These programs are available on company time and include such topics as:

  • Management Development
  • Professional Skills
  • Technical Systems Training
  • Computer Application Skills
  • Industry Knowledge
  • Process Briefing Sessions
  • Performance Management

ICON Central Laboratories provides to each employee a formal Performance Management Process. This program is designed to document your current performance and progress and assess your training needs for the coming year. All newly hired, transferred and promoted employees receive a 90-day performance evaluation. All employees receive an annual evaluation at the end of each year. As a part of the evaluation process, employees complete a self-evaluation. The manager also completes an evaluation of the employee and a meeting is scheduled to discuss the employee’s performance and goals for the upcoming year. Goals are set, progress is documented and accomplishment is evaluated as part of the annual review.

External Training

For individual and/or unique training needs, external training is coordinated and paid for by ICON Central Laboratories, with approval of your manager. Conferences, seminars, webinars, industry meetings and workshops are all made available to employees on an as needed basis to compliment the internal training programs provided.

Wendy Chan

"I have been with ICON Central Laboratories for about 5 and a half-years. My current job title is IT Validation Analyst and I have been in this position for almost 2 and a half-years. In my current role, I have the opportunity to work with many people both inside and outside the company. My current position has helped me develop my interpersonal, problem solving and technological skills. These factors, along with others, make the time I spend at ICON very enjoyable."
